So! According to the Wall Street Journal, women view romance stories, even those of Jane Austen, to be erotica.Whereas men are drawn to real porn.
Whereas two-minute video clips are the most popular form of contemporary erotica for men, the most popular form for women remains the romance novel, an artifact that takes many hours to digest. (source)
I don’t know how well they did their survey or whether women were interviewed for this process, and I think not, but to assume that we find romance novels or even Pride and Prejudice to be erotic is a little far-fetched for me. If I want erotica it’s going to be more bodice-ripping than that pulp with Fabio on the cover. The point about the popularity of romance novels is true, but I’m not sure who would equate that with erotica.
I agree that women like their porn to have more substance than close ups of glistening hard male members and orifices. That doesn’t turn me on and I suspect the same goes for many women. I am more turned on by touch and embraces, a more intimate connection I believe than just flipping her over and “having at it” . And, that’s where the difference between men and women comes in. Lust versus love, sex versus intimacy-you know what I mean.
What’s the sexiest book you’ve ever read? I’d have to say that one book which got me going was one of the Outlander series by Diane Gabaldon. There were some sexy, steamy passages in one of the first couple. But, I was also in the middle of a divorce and hadn’t had sex in over a year and good sex in many years. The Story of “O” was erotic, sexy and disturbing all at the same time. But, I”m pretty sure if I were to read a Victoria Holt novel right now that it wouldn’t make me wet. I’ve never even looked at contemporary romance stuff so I may be too ill-informed to even have this discussion? I think we all turn to porn or erotica to arouse us… so a good indicator might be whether it’s masturbation material? And, that may differ widely even within a gender.
What turns you on? What turns your partner on? And, do you ever read together (one of my yet-to-be fulfilled fantasies)?
